Northwest Austin Kitchen Remodel with New Shaker Cabinets & Pantry
This Northwest Austin kitchen remodel involved much more than updating the existing finishes. Austin Painting and Cabinets removed the furdown above the kitchen cabinets and the original pantry, incorporated new shaker cabinets extending to the ceiling, and installed a new pantry cabinet to create a more cohesive kitchen design.
The renovation also included new flooring, professional cabinet painting, 3cm MSI Marfitaj quartz countertops, MSI Urbanslat Blonde backsplash tile, a new sink and faucet, a reverse osmosis water filtration system, new cabinet hardware, and updated LED lighting.
The cabinets were painted Sherwin-Williams SW 6177 Softened Green in satin, while the walls and ceilings were finished in Sherwin-Williams SW 6420 Queen Anne's Lace in satin.
Before the Northwest Austin Kitchen Remodel
The existing kitchen had a furdown above the cabinets and a pantry that were removed as part of the remodel. Eliminating these elements allowed us to incorporate new shaker cabinetry extending to the ceiling and a replacement pantry cabinet.
Rather than limiting the project to cabinet painting, the homeowners chose to update the cabinet configuration, flooring, countertops, backsplash, plumbing fixtures, and lighting.
After the Kitchen Remodel: Softened Green Cabinets & Updated Finishes
The finished kitchen features new shaker cabinetry extending to the ceiling, a new pantry cabinet, and a coordinated combination of Softened Green cabinets, Queen Anne's Lace walls, MSI quartz countertops, and large-format backsplash tile.
New flooring, cabinet hardware, plumbing fixtures, and LED lighting complete the transformation.

Removing the Kitchen Furdown & Extending Cabinets to the Ceiling
One of the biggest changes in this Northwest Austin kitchen was removing the existing furdown, sometimes called a kitchen soffit, above the upper cabinets.
Removing the furdown allowed us to incorporate new shaker cabinets extending to the ceiling rather than leaving the space above the upper cabinetry unused.
This change also created a more continuous appearance between the cabinets and ceiling, giving the kitchen a more cohesive design.
Furdown removal requires planning around the existing construction. Before making similar changes, homeowners should determine whether plumbing, electrical wiring, ductwork, or other components are concealed within the furdown.
New Shaker Kitchen Cabinets & Pantry Replacement
In addition to removing the furdown, we removed the original pantry and incorporated a new pantry cabinet into the updated kitchen design.
The new shaker cabinetry provides a consistent cabinet style throughout the remodeled space, while the upper cabinets extend to the ceiling.
Replacing or adding cabinetry allows homeowners to make changes that aren't possible through cabinet painting alone, including modifying storage configurations and incorporating new cabinet sizes.

Sherwin-Williams Softened Green Kitchen Cabinets
The kitchen cabinets were painted Sherwin-Williams SW 6177 Softened Green in a satin finish.
Softened Green provides a muted green color that creates contrast with the lighter walls, countertops, and backsplash. The satin finish gives the cabinetry a subtle sheen.
Professional cabinet painting was incorporated into the larger kitchen remodel to create a coordinated finish across the cabinetry.
MSI Marfitaj Quartz Countertops & Urbanslat Blonde Backsplash
The countertops were replaced with 3cm Marfitaj quartz from MSI, while the backsplash features MSI Urbanslat Blonde 16" x 48" tile.
The large-format backsplash tile provides a different design approach from traditional small subway tile, using larger individual pieces across the backsplash area.
The quartz countertops and backsplash were selected to complement the Softened Green cabinets and Queen Anne's Lace walls.

New Kitchen Flooring, Sink & Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration
The remodel also included replacing the kitchen flooring, installing a new sink and faucet, and adding a reverse osmosis water filtration system.
These upgrades improved the kitchen's finishes and incorporated updated fixtures and water filtration alongside the new cabinetry and countertops.
New LED Ceiling & Undercabinet Lighting
New LED ceiling lighting and undercabinet lighting were installed as part of the renovation.
The ceiling lighting provides general illumination, while undercabinet lighting helps illuminate the countertop work areas beneath the upper cabinets.
Planning the lighting alongside the new cabinetry and backsplash allowed these improvements to be incorporated into the overall remodel.
Queen Anne's Lace Kitchen Walls & Ceilings
The kitchen walls and ceilings were painted Sherwin-Williams SW 6420 Queen Anne's Lace in a satin finish.
The lighter neutral paint color complements the Softened Green cabinets and provides a coordinated backdrop for the new countertops, backsplash, flooring, and lighting.
